Superb five courses at Restaurant de Gaffel

Restaurant de Gaffel, the destination for our Sunday lunch, is housed in a 350-year-old farmhouse in Valthe, an old village situated on the Hondsrug (a ridge mainly in the province of Drenthe). Given the beautiful countryside with its cycling and hiking routes many of the restaurant’s clients choose to stay for a whole weekend.

Maître Rôtisseur Roderik Seubers had joined the Chaîne only in the previous month. We were therefore keen to visit “de Gaffel” to enjoy the quality of his cuisine. Despite being a small group the atmosphere was no less enthusiastic.

During the reception we admired the beautiful amuse-bouches. Afterwards the five-course lunch was served in a private room. Under the supervision of Amanda Rixtum, the service brigade presented the delicious courses with precision. The matching French wines were expertly poured and commented on.

On behalf of the group, Bailli Elect Maarten Westerhof warmly thanked the brigades. It was then the moment for Bailli Délégué Gerrit de Kiewiet to present Chef Roderik with the Chaîne Professionals Plaque - a worthy accolade given the quality of the cuisine and the warmth of welcome, both of course in the finest traditions of the Confrérie.

For those who had made the journey to Valthe, a cosy gathering was waiting in Maarten and Tonnie Westerhof’s garden to finish the day.
